Gladys Sharp is the secondary antagonist of Over the Hedge. She is the former president of Home Owners Association, Dwayne's leader, boss, and love interest, and Tiger's former owner.

She is voiced by Allison Janney.

Biography[]

In Over the Hedge[]

At the start of the film, Gladys is the president of the Home Owners Association ensuring that each house in El Rancho Camelot follow the strict H.O.A rules and also obsessed with the quality of every home in the neighborhood. She is first seen talking nicely on the phone while drinking and driving her car to her home. After Gladys later talks on the phone, saying that she is the president of Home Owners Association as well as saying that the grass is supposed to be 2 inches and according to her measuring stick, the grass is 2.5, she grabs the rest of her supermarket products that she carries them to her home. Later when Gladys notices that RJ and the gang are making a mess in her backyard and gets frightened by them when she opens the door to check on her pet cat Tiger, she later scares them away by using a broom while angrily states that she just cleaned up and calling them filthy vermin. Meanwhile after Hammy pretended to have rabies in front of Shelby and Mackenize in order to get the food, Gladys talks to Janis, who is the mother of the girl scouts about what just happen and when Janis leaves, she angrily tells her that she will be worried about the end of suburban peace and tranquility.

Unfortunately for Gladys, the animals return many times to steal food, which risks ruining the neighborhood. because of that, Gladys hire Dwayne LaFontant as her henchman to kill RJ and his friends. Gladys walks out of her home only to find some neighborhood people gathering around an unconscious Ozzie laying on the floor. She tells the others and lies that she called Dwayne to kill the animals before they get hurt like this. When Dwayne arrives, she questions his whereabouts and tells him that she's having a party the following day and "so far Debbie's car killed more animals than [he has]". When Dwayne tries to handle Ozzie by using his claw, she tells Janis that she certainly hopes Ozzie is not any pain (showing that she cares about Ozzie's life and might have a little care about wild animals despite her dislike of wild animals) but however Dwayne fails to catch Ozzie and Gladys yells at one of the humans to kill Ozzie and because of that, Ozzie escapes to safety. Later, Gladys says garbage cans must not be on the curb before 8:00 in the morning, but the Spuddies can and a wagon fall (dropped by RJ) on Gladys's car causing it to explode but Gladys escapes to safety. That night, Gladys got traps in order to prevent animals from sneaking into her house and also asks Dwayne about the Depelter Turbo, to which he replies it's a contraband item which is illegal in every state except Texas, Gladys purchases it anyway, and Dwayne installs it.

When RJ was about to tell Verne about the list of food, he needs for Vincent. The raccoon sees that Gladys has bought a massive stockpile of food for her party the next day in which causes RJ to have another plan of getting the food back by invading her house.

The next morning, she wakes up in her room to the kitchen drinking coffee before noticing that the animals are in her house and gets sprayed by Stella as well as also called Dwayne to catch them but all of them are captured (except RJ) and she also blames him for the animals sneaking inside her house and orders him to deal with them "as imhumanely as possible".

Later on, the animals commandeer Dwayne's van and return to Gladys's home, only to destroy it. Enraged by the fact that her beautiful home is destroyed, and the animals came back and escaped, she attemptes to kill them by using a weed whacker. She is then frozen in time after Hammy drinks an energy drink which cause him to move extremely fast. He manages to defeat Gladys, Dwayne, and Vincent by activating the Depelter Turbo. Gladys ends up screaming in rage (likely in pain as well) as it incinerates the three. She loses her hair and her clothes are torn.

Gladys later got fired from her job and arrested by the police and she tries to make the police officers to let her go by blaming Dwayne for the Depelter Turbo being in her backyard, but the officer tells her that her name was on the contract and she could tell it to the judge. Gladys angrily tried to tell them to let her go and she ended up fighting the police officers.

In Over the Hedge: The Video Game[]

In the video game, Gladys does not seem to have any strict H.O.A. rules. However, she still dislikes wild animals.

At the end of the video game, Gladys does not get arrested, so her fate is unknown.

Personality[]

Gladys has an intense hatred and disgust for wild animals; one of the reasons is because of how they keep attacking her house and stealing her stuff. However, she seems to have no problem with domestic animals as she had a pet cat named Tiger.

Gladys is very strict with her H.O.A. rules and is constantly worried about animals "lowering her property values".

Despite this, Gladys is obsessed with perfection and doesn't tolerate mistakes that get in her way.

Appearance[]

Gladys is a tall, slender beautiful middle-aged woman with black neck-length hair, green eyes, and pale skin.

She usually dresses in a black blazer over a red tank top shirt, black pants, and black shoes. Her nighttime outfit consists red pajamas with gold linings and a letter "G." She also wears rabbit slippers.

Trivia[]

Gladys is similar to Cruella de Vil: Both are animal haters and then get arrested at the climax.
She was once referred to as "Nancy" and "Sister" by Dwayne.
Her car is based on a 2nd generation Lincoln Navigator.
- Her license plate was GLADY$$$
- Her car was destroyed when a wagon stacked with food and a cooler fell from the sky and exploded upon impact.
- When RJ dropped the empty Spuddies can, it fell on Gladys's car before the car was destroyed by the food wagon. it should be noted that the wagon should have landed first before the empty can did, even if the chips hadn't fallen out
Gladys, and Dwayne are the only human characters in the film not to be minor characters.
- Also, not to mention, both Glady and Dwanye's name was mentioned by once in the film.
Gladys was originally going to be a real estate agent but was changed to the President of Homeowners Association, to add the story.
In Over the Hedge: The Video Game, there is a woman that looks exactly like Gladys with the other differences is that the woman's hair is brown, and her blazer is white.
Despite hating wild animals, she does wear bunny slippers in end of the movie for some reason.
Allison Janney (the voice of Gladys Sharp) would later voice Ms. Grunion from the 2014 film, Mr. Peabody and Sherman (which is a another DreamWorks film).
